Competitive Public Speaking & Interpretation (Acting)
Speech is a competitive activity where students speak or perform a piece of their own writing or interpretation. Typically, it is centralized on a message or lesson a students wants their audience to take away. At East Ridge, we want advocacy to be at the core of our student's work.
East Ridge Speech participates in the 13 MSHSL sanctioned categories, many of which are dually sanctioned by the NSDA.
Genres of Speech
1
Public Address
Students research and write a speech on a topic of their own choosing that can be informative, persuasive, or analytical in nature.
This requires students to develop their researching and writing skills in addition to public speaking skills.
2
Interpretation (Acting)
Students perform their own interpretation of a piece of drama or literature that can be serious and/or humorous in nature.
This develops student's skills to convey a story through acting, oftentimes embodying multiple characters, while following the core elements of storytelling.
3
Draw/Limited Prep
Offers both a mix of PA and Interp events. These categories require students to prepare and perform a speech in a limited amount of time - often 30 minutes.
These events focus on the adaptability and quick thinking skills of students with a realm of knowledge.
